Meet Blue, Lauren's rescue dog

Sustainably handmade by Ara the altar

The brand

Founded by Lauren King, Ara the altar is inspired by the ancient world's perception of astronomy: Ara is a southern polar constellation that translates to 'the altar' in Latin. In early illustrations, Ara was depicted as an altar with burning incense, rising smoke, or sacrificial offerings. Lauren's interpretation of this led to the sourcing, creating, and offering of beautiful, unique objects for earth-aware individuals.

The jeweller

Working as a shoot producer in the fashion industry, Lauren King, the founder of Ara the altar, felt a deep pull towards the hands-on processes of designing and creating. She challenged herself to learn the ancient art of metalsmithing and from there, began creating designs that celebrate the unique, organic aesthetic of the Earth.

"I aim to tread lightly whilst creating eternal pieces that give the wearer a conscious connection with the beauty of our only planet," says Lauren.

Every adornment from Ara the altar is designed and created by Lauren in her workshop in northwest England, taking influence from astronomy, nature, and the ancient world's relationship with both. Ethics and sustainability influence every decision Lauren makes.

Ara the altar's sustainability promise

Handcrafted and made to order

Each one of Ara the altar's necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings are handmade by Lauren King, founder of Ara the altar, in Stockport (near Manchester), England, UK. All of the brand's designs are handmade to order, just for you.

Recycled sterling silver and 9ct yellow gold

Ara the altar commits to using only 100% recycled precious metal to reduce waste, environmental impact and repurpose existing material into something beautiful, with a conscience. For longevity, all of the brand's pieces are made from solid recycled silver or gold, never plated or gold filled.

Vegan

Ara the altar ensures that their own production process is vegan. They do not use industry standard polishing compounds that contain animal derivatives and refrain from any items that contain beeswax, leather or rawhide throughout their production process.

Sustainable packaging

All elements of Ara the altar packaging have a purpose and can be recycled or composted, including recycled tissue paper and organic hemp fibre grown in Yorkshire. Accompanying cards are printed locally with vegetable ink on recycled card stock.

Every order is complemented with a dried flower, grown seasonally here in the UK. Lauren handwrites a little note to accompany every order, using her fountain pen and natural, vegan ink.
