An interview with Liz Crow Jewellery

Liz Crow invites us into a world where every piece of jewellery tells a story. With roots in Fine Art painting, her designs blend personal narrative and philosophy, drawing inspiration from life's fluidity and the transformative allure of molten metal. Her jewellery is more than adornment; it's an expression of balance, movement, and contrast, capturing both beauty and meaning.

Her collections, Present and Resilient, aren't just visual delights—they're embodiments of inner strength and mindfulness. Each handmade necklace, earring, bracelet, and ring design serves as a modern talisman, crafted with care and intention to inspire and empower. Join us as we explore the inspirations that turn simple adornments into soulful expressions, making each piece a cherished part of the wearer's journey.

Can you share a bit about your background and how you got started in jewellery making?

I've always had a creative streak, and my passion for art led me to earn a degree in Fine Art painting. This background gave me a solid foundation in design, where I learned to focus on elements like positive and negative space, balance, and contrast to bring energy and movement into my work. These principles are something I carry into my jewellery designs today, allowing me to create pieces that feel both dynamic and harmonious.

After completing a few evening courses to learn the basics of jewellery making, I quickly discovered how much I loved the craft. It wasn’t long before I realized I wanted to turn this passion into a career. Knowing I needed to expand my skills and knowledge, I took the step of enrolling in a part-time jewellery diploma at Hatton Garden, while working my 9-to-5 job. This experience was invaluable—it covered everything from technical craftsmanship to design theory, providing me with a well-rounded understanding of the field.

What really resonated with me was working with molten metal and its transformative nature. I felt a deep connection to the process, as it mirrored the fluidity and changeability of life itself. Since that moment, I’ve been completely hooked on jewellery making, and it’s become an obsession that continues to drive my creativity and passion.

What inspired you to incorporate mantras into your jewellery designs, and how do they reflect your personal philosophy?

I've always recognised the power of jewellery to inspire and empower us, especially since it's something we wear that is close to us, every day. Growing up, I used jewellery in symbolic ways—like a bangle inscribed with "Love, Joy, Peace" that I would turn to face me, keeping those words personal so others couldn't see. When I was diagnosed with hair loss, I sought wearable reminders to help me stay mindful and refocus on my inner strength. Each time I felt overwhelmed, these pieces helped me shift my thoughts, and they became instrumental in growing my jewellery business while working full-time. Creating these reminders in the form of jewellery has been transformative for me, and I hope it can do the same for other women.

I design with the intention of embedding these messages into the metal itself, with mantras known only to the wearer. My signature fluid, dynamic style embodies the belief that "energy flows where intention goes," offering a subtle reminder to refocus thoughts and stay grounded.

My personal philosophy centres on being compassionate toward our minds and bodies, which in turn helps us extend that compassion to others. As a yogi, meditation and Eastern wisdom guide me, and I prioritise wellness and self-care. I believe we all have the inner strength to shape our lives, and by tapping into it, we unlock our limitless potential. My own experience of channeling loss into something positive—building my business—has proven this, and I want to help other women discover their own power as well.

Tell us a bit about your recent collections and how you researched them.

Both my Present and Resilient collections are deeply inspired by Eastern wisdom. The Present Collection reflects on the fleeting nature of life, encouraging us to embrace the moment without clinging to people, things, or experiences. Inspired by Buddhist philosophy and the ocean's constant motion, each piece embodies still waves, reminding us of life's impermanence and the importance of being present. The textured designs subtly convey this message.

The Resilient Collection draws from the Taoist teaching, "what is fluid and yielding will overcome what is hard and rigid." This metaphor encourages adaptability and resilience in facing life's challenges. The fluid design of each piece reflects this, serving as a modern talisman to remind us, “I am resilient.”

Each collection includes pieces named after the qualities they represent. In Present, you’ll find pieces named Awe, Wonder, and Presence, while in Resilient, names like Fortitude, Endurance, and Tenacity embody their purpose.

My creative process is led by experimentation with molten metal, letting the magic that happens in this transformative process, guide the designs. I am driven by the desire to create pieces that go beyond aesthetics, weaving beauty and inspiration into women’s lives. My designs are grounded in personal narratives, drawing on Eastern wisdom, mindfulness, and minimalist design.

What techniques do you enjoy using most in your jewellery-making process?

I deeply value experimental approaches in my creative process, drawing from my fine art background to work expressively with molten metal as if it were paint. This allows me to approach metalworking with a sense of spontaneity and freedom, exploring the fluidity and unpredictability of the material. One of my favorite techniques involves splashing molten metal onto different surfaces, creating dynamic, organic textures that capture a sense of movement and energy. This method brings a raw, tactile quality to my work, which I love combining with other innovative techniques. The continual discovery of new ways to manipulate materials is essential to my process. By pushing the boundaries of traditional techniques, I strive to develop a distinctive style that reflects my curiosity and passion for innovation.

What do you hope wearers feel when they adorn your creations, and how do you envision your jewellery becoming part of their story?

I hope women feel inspired and empowered to connect with their highest selves, unlocking the limitless potential that exists within them when they wear each piece. By wearing beautiful jewellery, I hope they not only experience an outward sense of confidence but also feel an inner strength that grounds them. These pieces are meant to be a reminder of their inherent power—the ability to shape their own reality, moment by moment. Each piece is designed with intention, helping women tap into the resilience, courage, and creativity they already possess.

I envision this jewellery becoming a meaningful part of their personal journey, something they turn to in moments of uncertainty, change, or challenge. Whether they are navigating health issues, as I did, or staying focused on a long-held dream, these pieces are there to support them. They are more than adornments; they are symbols of the wearer's strength, courage, and potential.

Each unique design celebrates their individuality, offering a reflection of their inner beauty and personal story. I want women to feel that through wearing these creations, they are not only expressing their unique style but also embracing their authentic selves. These pieces are crafted to empower them, to remind them of the incredible potential they have within, and to help them stay connected to that inner strength as they navigate the ups and downs of life.
