The brand
Maalo was born in 2019 from the desire to create timeless, wearable jewellery for every occasion. Mexican designer Montserrat Alonso balances a contemporary aesthetic with inspirations from the natural world, women, and Mexican culture.
The jeweller
After five years of working in the fashion industry with high street brands, Mon decided to pursue her dream of making jewellery. From the beginning, she knew she wanted to approach her collections with a conscious mentality. The outcome was Maalo, a truly sustainable brand whose pieces are handmade either by Mon herself in London or a small team of skilled artisans in Mon's hometown in Mexico.
"Jewellery is part of a person's identity," says Mon, "and the longer you wear a jewellery piece, the more history it builds."

Ethical production
Maalo believes in sourcing ethical materials to produce pieces that last forever and have minimal impact on our planet.
“The planet is part of every decision we make," says Mon, founder of Maalo, "and so we ensure all aspects of our business are sustainable. It's very important to give back to the Earth and to the people who are part of the process.”
Handcrafted and made to order
All pieces are designed in East London by Montserrat and then handmade in small batches either by herself or by a small team of artisans in her hometown in Mexico. This approach avoids the unnecessary waste caused by mass production and supports the craft of local talent in Mexico.
Recycled sterling silver and 9ct yellow gold
Maalo commits to using only 100% recycled sterling silver to minimise the environmental impact of mining.
Sustainable packaging
Maalo's packaging also reflects their ethical and circular mindset. Their jewellery boxes are FSC®-certified, and made with recycled cardboard and water-based glue. The cleaning cloth is made from organic cotton, and their box inserts are made from seeded paper, which you can plant to grow beautiful wildflowers or put in your compost.
Charity
Maalo is a brand that aims to help women feel stronger and more confident. They support organisations that are contributing to the development of women in different regions in Mexico. At the end of every year, during their busiest period, Maalo donates 10% of our revenue to NGOs that fits their values.
In 2020 Maalo supported Huellas Que Trascienden, an organisation that creates opportunities for female entrepreneurs in rural areas across Chiapas. Since 2021, Maalo have supported Fondo Semillas, a feminist movement that works with different organisations to fight gender violence and cultivate gender equality.
