Gold-filled jewellery is made from a base metal (usually silver or brass) that is bonded to a gold outer layer. The gold colour on these pieces is more durable than traditional gold plating and is less likely to wear. Gold vermeil plated jewellery is made from a sterling silver base with a gold plating that is at least 2.5 microns thick and of 10 carats or higher. While these pieces require more care than gold-filled designs, they generally use higher quality gold and base metals.
